The village developed in the Romantic era and it is regarded as an outstanding cultural and historical monument. The village fiercely resists the passing of time, it attracts us and invites us. Škocjan caves regional parkThe caves are protected as part of the natural and cultural heritage and are included in UNESCO's list of World's Natural and Cultural Heritage sites. Intact nature, underground tunnels with stalactites, the wild Reka river, that pushed its way through the underworld, are all part of an unforgettable experience. Vilenica caveIt was one of the first caves in Europe to be opened to the public. Until the middle of the 19 th century it was considered as one of the largest, most beautiful and most visited caves of the Karst region. According to local tradition, people believed that is was inhabited by fairies. Its name derives from the Slovenian word "vile", which means fairies. An international literary award is also called “Vilenica”. Lokev – the tabor war museumThe defence tower was built in 1485 in order to protect local people from Turkish invasions. Today it hosts a museum with an exhibition of weapons and uniforms from 1780 to 1990. Postojna caveThe mysterious underworld of the Postojna cave, which was excavated, formed and weaved by water, conceals a beautiful scenery that has been created through million years, drop by drop, year by year. You can visit a 20 km long series of dry and watery galleries, and you can observe the "Proteus" which lives in this untouched underground realm. |
